If the US has control of Afghanistan, why is Opium the largest cash crop?
Q. Opium remains, by far, the largest cash crop in Afghanistan. Opium production has increased steadily from 185 metric tons in 2001 to 8,200 metric tons in 2007. As a result, Afghanistan has become the world s largest opium producer, with its share of the total world supply increasing from 52 percent in 1995 to 93 percent in 2007. Quite an increase in production since the US invaded.

A. Because we (and our NATO allies) don't have enough troops on the ground to reign in the Taliban, and we haven't given local farmers incentive to grow alternative crops. And as a result, Taliban and Al Qaeda are swimming in cash to support their war efforts, from the drug-money of these opium crops. Here's an excellent interview with a Pakistani journalist, Ahmed Rashid, as interviewed on charlie rose, where he details the situation in Afghanistan, as related to the opium crops:

why was cotton the most important cash crop in the 1790's?
Q. Did it have anything to do with the new cotton gin?

A. It fed the textile mills of England that were the progenitors of the Industrial Revolution. --- River, the cotton gin increased the output of cotton plantations worldwide, especially in the the US southern states. More cotton meant cheaper prices and cotton textile mills exploded with growth. The increased demand for cotton fueled the growth of slavery in the south and exacerbated the issue of slavery in the United States. Eventually the south felt they had to secede from the Union to ensure the expansion of slavery and continue to fuel their cotton industry. The defeat of the south ended their hegenomy in cotton production.

A. The only one I can think of is tobacco. In 1612 that John Rolfe began growing this crop. Rolfe shunned the harsh product grown by the local Indians, Nicotiana Rustica. It would never sell in London. He obtained seeds from the coveted Nicotiana Tabacum strain then being grown in Trinidad and South America--though Spain had declared a penalty of death to anyone selling such seeds to a non-Spaniard. This link will tell you other information about tobacco and the Native Americans.

Why doesn't America use Hemp as a cash crop?
Q. Other countries are starting to see the use of hemp in everything from clothing, paper, lotions, and building material for homes. It's faster to grow then tree's and cheaper. In the 50's hemp was given to the Native Americans in the Dakota's to grow, but then the government started the war on crime and hemp became illegal. Why? Besides the fact that the paper companies had ties to congress.

A. because IDIOTS think HEMP is marijuana. It's just that simple. I honestly believe if they LIFTED the laws against marijuana the USA would STOP sending BILLIONS, to countries in south america. If people could grow their own nobody would buy, kills the traffic, dealers go broke and shut down. The argument against this is "well everybody will smoke pot then" which is absurd, there won't be any MORE pot smokers then there are NOW. They WON'T stop it from coming in because they get their "CUT". The DEA and law enforcement brag on the news about "catching 300 lbs before it hits the street" meanwhile the SEMI with the 40ft trailer rolls on by behind them. I say legalize , and open up the hemp market. Paper requires tree's and tree's are… [cont.]

A. The southern states focused on cash crops such as cotton and tobacco thereby both expanding and limiting its agricultural development. It opened the door for advancements such as the cotton gin, which allowed the South to increase production exponentially, and other harvesting devices, but the South held a limited view on change. They had what worked and stuck with it. Thus, their industry suffered, though I know you weren't asking about the South's industrialization, or lack thereof.

Q. They said 36 billion last year. Do you guys think that the pro war on drugs lawmakers will get a clue that the prohibition of vices without victims is not working and that it will never work? Have we forgotten how the prohibition of alcohol gave rise to crime? If we are going to pick and choose then we should at least pick something better for our bodies and minds than alcohol and tabacco. What do you think?
Asked by bess - Tue Dec 19 16:46:15 2006 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Cannabis is only so expensive because of prohibition. Make it legal and it would quickly be the lowest earning cash crop. Too many people are making money on this "war" to give up their careers on both sides. The reason it is so popular is that so many people see through the hype and know that it is relatively harmless and actually has some benefits. The only ones that really believe that it is harmful are people that never even tried it.
