GNU Free Documentation License Does barley straw work to keep algae down in a pond? If so, where do I get it? Q. I have a pond that's a little less than an acre and I have a heck of a time keeping the algae down. The previous owner told me to use copper sulfate, which I get at the local ag store, but that's pretty expensive and I have to do it multiple times a year, which is a pain. I've heard that submerging a bale of barley straw works, but I don't know if that's true and if it is, how you do it or where you get barley straw. (I live in Northwestern PA.) Q. My pond is green and i am planning on getting barley straw, tieing small chunks of bushels of them in a net and anchoring them to rocks at the bottom of my pond (not at the surface). Straw may be used unbundled or packed loosely in mesh so that water flows freely through the packet. It should be placed where moving water will oxygenate it and carry its byproducts to the rest of the pond. It's best to anchor it by weight and line, and then to add some sort of float to keep it from sinking to less-oxygenated water as it becomes waterlogged. WE have also heard of success when the barley straw was placed inside a filtration system.
