Barley is a cereal grain derived from the annual grass Hordeum vulgare.

Barley has many uses. It serves as a major animal fodder, as a base malt for beer and certain distilled beverages, and as a component of various health foods. It is used in soups and stews, and in barley bread of various cultures, from Scotland to Africa.

In a 2007 ranking of cereal crops in the world, barley was fourth both in terms of quantity produced (136 million tons) and in area of cultivation (566,000 km²).

Biology

Barley is a member of the grass family. It is a self-pollinating, diploid species with 14 chromosomes. The wild ancestor of domesticated barley, Hordeum vulgare subsp. spontaneum, is abundant in grasslands and woodlands throughout the Fertile Crescent and is abundant in disturbed habitats, roadsides and orchards. Outside of this region the wild barley is less common and is usually found in disturbed habitats.

Does barley straw work to keep algae down in a pond? If so, where do I get it?
Q. I have a pond that's a little less than an acre and I have a heck of a time keeping the algae down. The previous owner told me to use copper sulfate, which I get at the local ag store, but that's pretty expensive and I have to do it multiple times a year, which is a pain. I've heard that submerging a bale of barley straw works, but I don't know if that's true and if it is, how you do it or where you get barley straw. (I live in Northwestern PA.)

Barley Straw for Clearer Pond -- Can i place them at bottom of pond?
Q. My pond is green and i am planning on getting barley straw, tieing small chunks of bushels of them in a net and anchoring them to rocks at the bottom of my pond (not at the surface). Wil this help prevent algae from forming or must hte barley straw be near the surface where the algae is forming?

A. Straw may be used unbundled or packed loosely in mesh so that water flows freely through the packet. It should be placed where moving water will oxygenate it and carry its byproducts to the rest of the pond. It's best to anchor it by weight and line, and then to add some sort of float to keep it from sinking to less-oxygenated water as it becomes waterlogged. WE have also heard of success when the barley straw was placed inside a filtration system.
