Cereals, grains, or cereal grains are grasses (members of the monocot families Poaceae or Gramineae) cultivated for the edible components of their fruit seeds (botanically, a type of fruit called a caryopsis): the endocarp, germ, and bran. Cereal grains are grown in greater quantities and provide more food energy worldwide than any other type of crop; they are therefore staple crops. Grain is both a fruit and a vegetable. In their natural form (as in whole grain), they are a rich source of vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, fats, oils, and protein. However, when refined by the removal of the bran and germ, the remaining endocarp is mostly carbohydrate and lacks the majority of the other nutrients. In some developing nations, grain in the form of rice, wheat, or maize (in American terminology, corn) constitutes a majority of daily sustenance. In developed nations, cereal consumption is moderate and varied but still substantial. The word cereal derives from Ceres, the name of the Roman goddess of harvest and agriculture. Asked by William - Fri Jan 1 18:05:33 2010 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments A. Kashi makes Mighty Bites, they are really good. Every child I have ever offered them to like them. They look like little people. My son loves Crispex and Kix. Wheat chex. Any healthy cereal "no/low sugar" cereal would be good to try. I stay away from the colorful cereal, fruit loops, apple jacks, anything with lots of color aren't good, they have dyes. My son and alot of kids react badly to them. When my son get sugar foods he doesn't get hyper, If he gets foods with dyes he is off the wall hyper!!! red #40 is the worst. Answered by honey - Fri Jan 1 21:32:10 2010 Organic cereals with fiber but low in carbs?
Q. I am trying to find an organic cereal with at least 5 grams of fiber but preferrably no more than 30 carbs in it. Its hard to find this even in non orangic cereals, but I just hate eating 42 carbs to get 7 grams of fiber. And I prefer organic, if I can't understand the ingredient I don't need to put it in my body ya know - so does anyone know of any cereals with fiber and low(ish) carbs? Asked by Co_25 - Mon Jul 21 10:35:50 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. I don't think it quite meets the organic criteria but it's closer than most, Kashi Go Lean has 13g protein, 10g fiber and 30 carbs (I net fiber and carbs and count it as 20 carbs). I put dried cherries on top, yum. Answered by jck - Mon Jul 21 11:06:42 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Cereals"
