How do I eliminate perennial rye grass from my bermuda lawn?
Q. I have noticed this season that both my front and back yards have a significant amount more of perennial rye and looks overwhelm my bermuda lawn. Is there anything that specifically targets perennial rye but will not harm the existing and new growth bermuda in my lawn? (Round Up is non-specific and kills everything/anything it touches)

A. From my past experiences, we found MSMA (MonoSodium acid MethaneArsonate) to be very effective in controlling perrenial ryegrass and other invasive grassy weeds found growing in established bermudagrass lawns. You'll need 2 to 3 applications (7 to 10 days apart) to kill all of the ryegrass...depending on the severity of infestation. It's also best if you can spray when temperatures are somewhat warm; between 80 to 90 degrees Farhenheit. I'd also recommend that you mix in a little surfactant with the MSMA so the spray solution will adhere to the grass and you'll get more solution into the ryegrass. Remember to irrigate your lawn thoroughly the day before you spray to avoid any stress to your lawn. AND irrigate again 2 days after an… [cont.]

A. Rye bread, including pumpernickel, is a widely eaten food in Northern Europe. Rye is also used to make the familiar crisp bread. Rye flour has a lower gluten content than wheat flour, and contains a higher proportion of soluble fiber. Some non-food uses of rye include rye whiskey and use as an alternative medicine in a liquid form, known as rye extract. Often marketed as Oralmat, rye extract is a liquid obtained from rye and similar to that extracted from wheatgrass. Its benefits are said to include a strengthened immune system, increased energy levels and relief from allergies, but there is no clinical evidence for its efficacy. What is the best and not so expensive way to get rid of rye grass?
Q. I live in North Carolina, and I have a brand new house with a yard full of rye grass. Of course you know rye grass dies in temp over 90 degrees. In the winter of course I will have beautiful green grass, but I want good grass in the summer, so do I need to dig it up and reseed, or just seed over with new seeds.

A. I need to take care of this at my place, too. I'm a landscape designer and here's what I'd do. Call the extension service and ask them what type of herbicide to use on it. Round Up would work but it would take several applications. Apply the herbicide, let the rye die. Rake smooth. Call a hydroseeding company and get Tifway or Tifsport bermuda sprayed on. Water twice a day for 21 days. It will turn out beautifully. (Zoyzia doesn't do well if hydroseeded.) Alternatively you could lay sod. Consider doing it yourself. It's not difficult but it is labor intensive. Instant lawn. Still, you have to water for 21 days. If you install the bermuda seed yourself it still has to be watered everyday for 21 days to get established. Don't fertilize… [cont.]

How do you grow clovers and rye properly indoors?
Q. Hi, I have a science experiment on acid rain on nitrogen fixing bacteria. I was wondering how to grow inoculated clover seeds, rye seeds, and a mixture of two indoors. Could you be specific - as in size of pot, when to water, amount of water, amount of sun, type of media used, etc. - please? This is sort of sidetracked, but how big is 4x4 pot? Thank you so much!
Asked by Grace - Sun Oct 26 18:58:49 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You might want to try this one under school or homeschool, too. Sorry I'm not much help, but most plants grown indoors need basic things, water, sunshine, and drainage. You need to consider how well your indoor pot will drain water so you won't mess up the roots of the plant and kill them.

Can I substitute self-rising or all-purpose flour for barley or rye flour?
Q. There is a dog treat recipe I want to make, but it has barley and rye flour. The only kinds of flour I have are all-purpose and self-rising. Can I substitute either of these for the barley or rye flour?

A. Use the all-purpose, because barley and rye flours don't have salt and baking powder in them already like self-rising does.

How many calories are in pastrami on rye?
Q. How many calories are in pastrami on rye with coleslaw and Russian dressing? I'm just curious because I count my calories everyday. Obviously not the healthiest thing to eat but it's certainly not the worst thing to eat either. So how many calories are in one pastrami on rye sandwich?
Asked by Joe - Tue Aug 4 00:29:21 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. If you are watching calories, you might skip this one. Even turkey pastrami has quite a few calories. Real beef pastrami has a lot. The Russian dressing is not low either and if you make the coleslaw sauerkraut and add a slice of swiss cheese you have a Reuben - my FAV!! If you eat the whole thing it's probably going to be over 800 calories if it's made without skimping.

How does The Catcher in the Rye deal with war?
Q. How does Salinger's war experiences relate to what is written in The Catcher of the Rye?

A. The first thing that i can think of is: JD Salinger was in the army and landed on Utah Beach on D-Day. In the book, Holden mentions that DB was in the army and landed on D-Day. Holden can't seem to understand why DB would just lie in bed in his room when he was on furlough and can't understand why he wouldn't want to write about his war experiences. Salinger was hopsitalized for "combat stress reaction" after Germany was defeated.

A. Depends why you are planting. When we put in a new stand of grass or alfa, we always put oats in as well, for 2 reasons. First both the grass and alpha are very small seeds, and we're planting with a large air drill, so the oats help to stop bridging in the tank. More importantly, when you plant grass, you basically lose a years worth of use on your land, as you don't get a crop the first year. If you overseed with oats you get a cash crop in year one when the grass is establishing, when we combine the oats, the grass is free to grow away and be ready for use the following year. We rafm in a very dry area so the oat stubble also helps us catch plenty of snow on the field, so the spring melt gives good moisture to get the grass away in… [cont.]

What the next best book after I read Catcher in the Rye?
Q. I read Catcher in the Rye for an English assignment, but now I have to read another classic. Do You have any other suggestions.

A. If you want to change flavour then go for Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte Or maybe Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens
