A crop is a non-animal species or variety that is grown to be harvested as food, livestock fodder, fuel or for any other economic purpose. Major world crops include maize (corn), wheat, rice, soybeans, hay, potatoes and cotton. While the term "crop" most commonly refers to plants, it can also include species from other biological kingdoms. For example, mushrooms like shiitake, which are in the fungi kingdom, can be referred to as crops. In addition, certain species of algae are also cultivated, although it is also harvested from the wild. In contrast, animal species that are raised by humans are called livestock, except those that are kept as pets. Microbial species, such as bacteria or viruses, are referred to as cultures. Microbes are not typically grown for food, but are rather used to alter food. For example, bacteria is used to ferment milk to produce yogurt.

Why did crops that originated in the Fertile Crescent spread rapidly through the Americas and Africa?
Q. From the book: Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond... Why did crops and animals diffuse less quickly and easily through the Americas and Africa? Describe the challenges that climate poses in relation to the spread of crops and animals Please help me..I've been reading this book over and over and cannot understand the questions. Thank you.

A. The reason they spread rapidly is because they were successfully used by humans. These crops which originated from the arid regions had large seeds and these large seeds were easily stored and used for food. Those societies that adopted agriculture with these seeds succeeded. OK now repeat that three times real fast Those societies with those seeds succeeded. OK Sorry, I digressed. Generally, a crop from the desert will be able to survive in more diverse climates. Their seeds are large and the young plants are therefore more hardy and easily sown. They can then be easily grown with irrigated or non-irrigated fields. Africa has poor soil and much of it is not arable or it is tropical and not particularly suited to this type of… [cont.]

How do you stop the birds from eating your crops in Virtual Villagers 2 for the iPod Touch/iPhone?
Q. I have been having lots of trouble with this game for iPod touch, is there a way to set up a scarecrow to stop the birds from eating your crop? Because my villagers keep dying due to there being no food to eat. The coconuts/fish are all used up, and the crops are the only consistent way to feed the villagers, but the stupid birds keep eating them!!! What do I do?? Thanks in advance.

What edible plants or crops can grow in shallow soil?
Q. I am designing a cantilevered platform to grow crops and I would perfer as a design aesthetic to keep it as shallow as posible, so are there variety of root or leaf vetable or fruits even herbs that would do well with minimal soil depth. i.e. less then a foot or even better less then 6 inches.

A. All kinds of beans should do well -- peas, too. They make their own nitrogen in symbiosis with bacteria, but they grow even better if you use a mixture of urine and water, for example. I've gotten plants with leaves almost 10 inches wide.
