Cereals, grains, or cereal grains are grasses (members of the monocot families Poaceae or Gramineae) cultivated for the edible components of their fruit seeds (botanically, a type of fruit called a caryopsis): the endocarp, germ, and bran. Cereal grains are grown in greater quantities and provide more food energy worldwide than any other type of crop; they are therefore staple crops. In their natural form (as in whole grain), they are a rich source of vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, fats, oils, and protein. However, when refined by the removal of the bran and germ, the remaining endocarp is mostly carbohydrate and lacks the majority of the other nutrients. In some developing nations, grain in the form of rice, wheat, or maize (in American terminology, corn) constitutes a majority of daily sustenance. In developed nations, cereal consumption is moderate and varied but still substantial. The word cereal derives from Ceres, the name of the Roman goddess of harvest and agriculture. From Google News Search: "Cereal" What is the purpose of mixing solids with cereal? Q. I understand baby cereal has no nutritional value; therefore, if my son enjoys his solids and eats them without the cereal, should I continue to mix it with cereal? What is the purpose of cereal? As a filler? Thanks for your honest answers. Asked by KaericsMommy - Wed Apr 22 11:09:17 2009 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments A. From what I have read, cereal is used to get them used to eating because you can make it really really thin when they're first learning to eat food. But if your son eats solids just fine, I wouldn't use them. I don't know that I'll ever use them. My son is 3 months old right now, and when I'm ready to give him food, I'll probably start with a mashed up banana. **By the way, my son has a Bumbo, too, and he does the exact same thing your son is doing in your picture. He tries to turn around and see what's behind him!** Answered by Mommyhood is good - Wed Apr 22 11:15:06 2009 When do you start adding cereal to a babys formula? Or are you even supposed to add it to the formula anymore? Q. My 3 month old will completely finish off a 4oz bottle of formula. Should I add cereal to it, or make it 6 oz instead of 4? Also, I heard you arent supposed to add cereal anymore, but make it seperately? Is this true? When I thought my daughter had acid reflux, the on call pediatrician told me to add some cereal to her bottle!? Why would she say that if it isnt good for her? Asked by bridgetsmomma621 - Mon Sep 18 20:19:33 2006 - - 22 Answers - 0 Comments A. If your baby seems fussy after they have drank the 4oz bottle like they're looking for more then, maybe boosting them up a few more ounces will do the trick. I know that a lot of mothers and nurses are leary of introducing cereal too early as they might choke. But it is suggested that you wait till about 6 months of age. Then try mixing one teaspoon of baby rice cereal to a sloppy consistancy of formula or breast milk. Use a soft tipped spoon. If the baby doesn't seem interested leave it for a few days. But remember it takes a while for babies to get the hang of using their mouth and tongue. So sometimes when you put something in their mouth they'll push it out with their tongue. That's not always a sign of disinterest. If the baby swats… [cont.] Answered by Christina R - Mon Sep 18 20:32:22 2006 Looking for a multi-grain cereal that is similar to oatmeal?
Q. When I was in Finland we ate a multi grain cereal that was similar to cooked oatmeal. I am trying to find something like it in the states. I think it had 4 or 5 different grains. If nothing packaged exists, where can I find different grains to cook like oatmeal? Asked by Dave A - Tue Apr 29 13:38:05 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. There are now several "multigrain" oatmeal products on the market. Check in the health food section of your grocery store. In Canada, President's Choice has a blue menu multigrain instant oatmeal that is really yummy. You can google "muesli" and will end up with a vast array of recipes that you can make yourself. Many recipes use fruit and fruit juice, and you can make warm or cold. A great product you may want to try at the grocery store is "Red River" cereal. It's been one of my favourites since I was a kid. Try it warm with a little bit of apple shredded on top and maple syrup to sweeten it! Most health food stores or bulk food stores (in Canada, Bulk Barn for example) sell the various grains or mixes to make these kinds of cereals.… [cont.] Answered by mangokdkat - Tue Apr 29 13:49:54 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Cereal" |
