Cereals, grains, or cereal grains are grasses (members of the monocot families Poaceae or Gramineae) cultivated for the edible components of their fruit seeds (botanically, a type of fruit called a caryopsis): the endocarp, germ, and bran. Cereal grains are grown in greater quantities and provide more food energy worldwide than any other type of crop; they are therefore staple crops. In their natural form (as in whole grain), they are a rich source of vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, fats, oils, and protein. However, when refined by the removal of the bran and germ, the remaining endocarp is mostly carbohydrate and lacks the majority of the other nutrients. In some developing nations, grain in the form of rice, wheat, or maize (in American terminology, corn) constitutes a majority of daily sustenance. From what I have read, cereal is used to get them used to eating because you can make it really really thin when they're first learning to eat food. If your baby seems fussy after they have drank the 4oz bottle like they're looking for more then, maybe boosting them up a few more ounces will do the trick. I know that a lot of mothers and nurses are leary of introducing cereal too early as they might choke. But it is suggested that you wait till about 6 months of age. Then try mixing one teaspoon of baby rice cereal to a sloppy consistancy of formula or breast milk. Use a soft tipped spoon. If the baby doesn't seem interested leave it for a few days. But remember it takes a while for babies to get the hang of using their mouth and tongue. So sometimes when you put something in their mouth they'll push it out with their tongue. Q. When I was in Finland we ate a multi grain cereal that was similar to cooked oatmeal. I am trying to find something like it in the states. I think it had 4 or 5 different grains. There are now several "multigrain" oatmeal products on the market. Check in the health food section of your grocery store. In Canada, President's Choice has a blue menu multigrain instant oatmeal that is really yummy. You can google "muesli" and will end up with a vast array of recipes that you can make yourself. Many recipes use fruit and fruit juice, and you can make warm or cold. A great product you may want to try at the grocery store is "Red River" cereal. It's been one of my favourites since I was a kid. Try it warm with a little bit of apple shredded on top and maple syrup to sweeten it!
