Why is Bacterial Transformation such an important technique in Biotechnology?
Q. I need this for a Biotechnology proposal.
Asked by Nate C - Wed Jan 16 12:32:57 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. "Transformation" in this context is generally cloning and expressing specific target genes/proteins in bacteria. This is generally the easiest way to make (and usually purify) large amounts of a particular protein you might be interested in. Unfortunately, since bacteria do not carry out many post-translational modifications needed by eukariotic cells (like glycosylation of specific proteins), other types of transformation (yeast, other cells, baculovirus in insect cells, etc.) need to be considered in those cases.

What is the best way to prepare for a biotechnology degree and a job along those lines?
Q. Im curious about the opportunities there are in CA for people who get a degree in biotechnology.
Asked by College Student - Fri Jul 25 14:32:27 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The best way to get into the biotechnology business is to get a PhD degree in a relevant subject. With a lesser degree, you are working for someone who has the doctorate. In any event, you will need six to eight chemistry courses, three quarters of physics, three semesters of calculus, general biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics, anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pharmacology, ... If you can, get a PhD from UC San Francisco. I loved it there.

A. I work in Residential Real Estate Finance but my wife worked in sticks briefly with Edward Jones. As long as you have some type of degree they will consider you and a sales background would help. They will provide you with all the training (paid) but you have to learn and study on your own from home. If you can stomach the workload you could fulfill your dream. I hope this helps.

Asked by Mirinda - Tue Apr 17 08:49:36 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. G'day, I think you mean Master in Biotechnology, since MBA means Master of Business Administration, totally different than Biotech. The earlier answerer do not know the uni that actually offers the course. There are only 39 universities in Australia and they are tightly regulated, therefore the quality and recognition of their graduates are equal from wherever university you are studying from. The Australian uni's offering Master in Biotech are as follows: Victoria Uni (www.vut.edu.au) Uni of Western Sydney (www.uws.edu.au) Flinders Uni (www.flinders.edu.au) RMIT Uni (www.rmit.edu.au) Tuition fee & requirements are available in those websites. Please make sure that the information you accessing are the ones for international students,… [cont.]
