Medicago sativa subsp. ambigua (Trautv.) Tutin Medicago sativa subsp. microcarpa Urban Medicago sativa subsp. sativa L. Medicago sativa subsp. varia (T. Martyn) Arcang. Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) is a flowering plant in the pea family Fabaceae cultivated as an important forage crop. In the UK, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand it is known as lucerne and as lucerne grass in south Asia. It resembles clover with clusters of small purple flowers. EcologyAlfalfa is a cool season perennial legume living from three to twelve years, depending on variety and climate. The plant grows to a height of up to 1 metre (3 ft), and has a deep root system sometimes stretching to 4.5 metres (15 ft). This makes it very resilient, especially to droughts. It has a tetraploid genome. This plant exhibits autotoxicity, which means that it is difficult for alfalfa seed to grow in existing stands of alfalfa. Therefore, it is recommended that alfalfa fields be rotated with other species (for example, corn or wheat) before reseeding. From Wikipedia under the

From Google News Search: "Alfalfa" How to prepare Broccoli sprouts and alfalfa sprouts? Q. Hi. Being a new vegan means trying new things. Like sprouts. I've bought broccoli sprouts and alfalfa sprouts. The only thing is I have no idea how to prepare. When I wash the alfalfa sprouts, it retains all the water and becomes "clumpy". Is that normal? As for the broccoli sprouts, they come on this little sponge bed and not sure the best way to get them clean. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks. Asked by unknown - Fri Apr 3 09:37:24 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments What are the alfalfa and grass hay prices in your area? Q. We had a dry June and July (38 days without rain) and now we have had lots of rain the past 2 weeks. Good quality hay was put up earlier in the year, but now there is alot rotting in windrows because it won't cure. I live in South Dakota, and round bales of grass hay is around $80/ton. Everybody seems to be hanging on to what they have. Just curious with what's going on across the country. Thanks! Mckaytaylor, you are right. My question is kind of vauge. I talked to my cousin yesterday, who mostly has row crops and no livestock. He puts up all his alfalfa in small squares (hard to find kids willing to throw bales anymore) and delivers small amounts of bales to fancy horse breeders and is getting $8/bale. Here in eastern Oklahoma we just put up 1000 squares of good bermuda hay, 60 pound bales, and they are going for $3.00 each. We also have some big rounds (800 lb) and they'll bring $22 - 28 each. I don't have alfalfa but I've been seeing it advertised for $5 a bale in the field, you haul it. After the drought of the past couple years though, when this same farm made only 670 light square bales total (!!), everyone is thrilled to death to have hay! Q. I consume 200 grams daily and I feel heathy with a capital H. I buy the seeds and grow the alfalfa sprouts myself; it cost only a fraction of the price that we pay at the store and it takes only 4 days in average, from seed to ready-to-eat alfalfa sprouts. Asked by aquazul - Sun Dec 30 23:06:45 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Yes alfala sprouts is a super-food. But you must try other seeds-sprouts. Have pleinty of them, with lot of differents tastes, vitamins, minerals and enzyms. I use personnaly about 20 differents seeds (lentils, alfala, brocoletti, radish, weat, quinoa, cresson, senf, etc...). I make them grow in my kitchen and I eat almost everyday in salad. I love them.
